For Those Not Yet Lost

“For Those Not Yet Lost”  in Monstrous Futures: A Sci-Fi Horror Anthology, 2023

“So why then is this person dead, two centuries before the end of their assignment and projected life span?

Evelyn frowns, then sighs. She’s already called her wife, letting her know that she’ll have to undergo quarantine procedures and won’t be home for two weeks. Standard time traveler quarantine protocol is one week. It takes them one week (usually) to determine if the body harbored any contaminant—organic, radiation, weaponry, etc.—that would put Evelyn at risk. But the inexplicable pit in her stomach when she received the body made Evelyn cautious. She said two weeks, but added that she was just being paranoid (for her wife’s peace of mind, not just Evelyn’s). Something is off, even if everything looks exactly as it should on the surface.

She really hates time travelers.”

“For Those Not Yet Lost” is about an autopsy on a time traveler.
