Dinosaur on the 18th Hole

“Dinosaur on the 18th Hole”  in Unspeakable Horror 3: Dark Rainbow Rising, 2023

“The kitschy golf course is a stark contrast to the claustrophobia of mine and Max’s apartment, a small space that should feel safe in its knowableness, but instead is rife with all the ways it was violated and defiled. The balcony window, scalable because we are only on the fourth floor. The door with a singular lock against the constant flow of bodies in the hallway. The elevator that betrays the floor we live on and provides a haven from which to spy on us as we walk down the hall. At least the shadows here are pretend, driven by animatronics and a sun that is struggling to wake up.

“Alright, Ioana, show me those serious putting skills,” Max says, gesturing for me to step up to the first hole.

I shake off the cloud that was starting to form (I want this, I want normal, I want this, I want normal) and assume my old stance, slipping easily and effortlessly back into it.

‘This is goofy golf,’ I correct. ‘And while it’s not serious, I will still kick your ass.’ “

“Dinosaur on the 18th Hole” is about seeing monsters in the shadows at the goofy golf course.

“And “Dinosaur on the 18th Hole,” by Kaitlin Tremblay provides an accurate depiction of vulnerability after a violation. The story is fraught with tension despite its whimsical backdrop of mini golf.” – Elaine Pascale, Hellnotes

“It’s a good book. Queer or not, give it a read, you’ll certainly be entertained and engaged.” – Arley Sorg, Lightspeed
